5 secrets and material selection guidelines for rust prevention treatment of gabion mesh
The gabion mesh is woven with high toughness low-carbon steel wire. If it is exposed to a humid environment or directly soaked in water for a long time, it is prone to rusting, which affects its service life and engineering safety. Therefore, this article will introduce several effective anti rust treatment methods to help you choose the appropriate anti-corrosion process according to actual engineering needs.

The rust prevention ability of gabion mesh mainly depends on the type of coating on the steel wire, and there are several common types:
Electrogalvanizing (cold galvanizing)
The coating weighs about 10 grams and has weak anti-corrosion performance. It is prone to rusting in humid air and is generally not recommended for use in important projects.
Ordinary hot-dip galvanizing
The weight of the coating is about 30-55 grams, which has a certain rust prevention ability and can usually last for about 2 years without rusting. Suitable for projects involving vegetation growth after covering soil such as slope protection and bank protection. Two years later, even if the gabion mesh begins to rust, its structure has formed a stable whole with the soil and vegetation, which does not affect the overall stability of the project.
High zinc layer hot-dip galvanizing
The coating weighs over 200 grams and has strong rust resistance. It can be used for up to 20 years without rusting in conventional atmospheric environments, and even performs well in neutral water quality (pH ≈ 7). It is currently the most widely used type of anti-corrosion.

Gaolfan (zinc aluminum alloy coating)
The anti-corrosion performance is about three times that of high zinc hot-dip galvanizing, with stronger corrosion resistance and longer service life, suitable for use in high standard engineering environments. The corresponding cost is slightly higher than that of hot-dip galvanized products.
PVC/PE film coating treatment
Adding a PVC or PE protective layer on the surface of galvanized (or high proof) gabion mesh not only greatly enhances its anti-corrosion ability, but also effectively resists water flow and UV erosion, while making the structure more beautiful and durable.
Reasonably selecting the coating type of gabion mesh can significantly improve its rust prevention performance, ensuring engineering safety and long-term stability. Choosing appropriate anti-corrosion technology based on specific usage environment and budget is the key to extending the service life of gabion mesh.
